Taking Care of Your New Cavapoo Puppy

For the first few hours, get acquainted! Keep your puppy warm in winter, and cool in summer. Limit taking them around other dogs until around 12 weeks or after their second vaccination.

This gives their vaccinations time to kick in and protect them from Parvo and other diseases. 

Please purchase a tube of Nutri-Cal or Forti-Cal gel to give to your puppy for the first few weeks after you pick up your puppy.

This helps to ensure puppy is getting what it needs while it is adapting to its new home.

When your puppy comes home to you, it's up to you to give your puppy the care it requires every day.

Your pup will give boundless love in return! There's a lot involved- your puppy needs nutritious puppy food, plenty of attention, gentle training, safe toys, a comfortable home, and proper veterinary care.

 Your puppy will have had it's Head to Tail Vet Health Exam, and be up to date on his/her vaccinations and dewormings.

 You will need to make sure that your puppy gets the next vaccinations after arrival, to be totally immune.

He/She will need to be dewormed once a month as well. Also you will need to put your puppy on a flea prevention program.

We've been feeding your puppy free choice feedings every morning and again in the evening.

 We like Diamond Puppy Food we obtain from our local Feed store. If you are unable to purchase this in your area try Purina Healthy Morsels for Puppies or another High Protein 28% Puppy Food of your choosing. See Puppy's Diet page.

  Give the copy labeled "Litter Medical Record" to your Vet when you go for your first visit.

 They will put you on a plan that works best for you and your puppy. 

Prevent Hypoglycemia!

 If your puppy doesn't eat the food dry, add a couple spoons of canned puppy food to the dry food. It is crucial that your puppy gets started eating and drinking right away. It is common for puppies to be a little sick to their stomachs during travel. Also adjusting to a new place with new water and food can sometimes cause a little diarrhea.

 Remember that your puppy is a baby. A cold draft is your puppies worst enemy! Also keep them cool in hot weather!!

 It is very important that your puppy get fresh water and food at least twice a day.

 It is crucial that if your puppy doesn't eat and drink enough, you need to consult your veterinarian.

 We start to potty train your puppy and teach it to obey simple commands. But sometimes they don't start to have full bladder control until around 8-9 weeks. Your puppy has been used to going potty on newspaper, and outside.

 You can continue to train him using newspaper and bringing him/her outside, and you may want to crate train your puppy.

Don't feed to dogs: chocolate, grapes and raisins, coffee, tea, alcohol, onions, garlic, bird and fish bones, macadamia nuts, xylitol: in many sugar free foods, raw eggs: the whites may decrease absorption of B vitamin Biotin.

Tips For A Happy Puppy:

1. Set your puppy up on a schedule

Choose a time for feeding, potty training and play that best fits your family. Your puppy may whimper or cry at night at first. Provide him/her with a warm blanket, soft toy and a dim light. You can either set him/her by your bed so he/she can see you or put your puppy in a room where he/she is alone. Whichever seems to be best.

2. Puppy proof your home

Check around your home for dangerous things your puppy could get into. Electric wires, open doors, balconies, medicines etc. Purchase a puppy Play Pen like the one at the bottom of this page. It is a safe place to put your puppy while you are away or busy. Decide on the type of potty training you will use. Read some books or google it. Crate Training has become very popular. We have been using newspaper for inside as well as taking outside to potty.

3. Prepare your family by explaining the schedule

Having the families help will make training your new puppy easier. If everyone works together your new puppy will be trained well for life!

4. Make your puppy feel at home

Allow your puppy to sleep with an article of your clothing, preferably something you've worn and that smells like you. This way, your puppy will become familiar with your scent and will feel more comfortable in his/her new environment.

5. Groom your puppy once a week

Good grooming habits start early. Regular brushing and bathing will keep your puppy feeling clean and fresh. A clean puppy is less likely to soil them selves in their crate. Dogs have a keen scent for foul odors. Make a bath fun and rewarding for all!

Use a mild and tear free formula made for puppies.

6. Checklist for Feeding

 Free choice or scheduled feeding. Two times a day for free choice. Four times a day for scheduled. Use puppy food with 26% to 28% Protein. We have been feeding Diamond Puppy Food found at your local store. You may also try Purina Puppy Healthy Morsels.

RECIPE FOR DOG BISCUITS: 

3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour, 3 cups rolled oats, 1/2 cup powdered milk, 1/2 cup bacon grease, 2tsp. cod liver oil, 2 eggs, 1-1/2 cups instant beef gravy.

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Combine all ingredients to make a sticky dough. Drop by tbsp. onto ungreased cookie sheets and bake for 50 minutes. Cool on rack and then store in plastic bags. Makes about 30 dog biscuits.
